Laser Tattoo Removal – Aftercare
Follow these instructions carefully to ensure optimal healing after your laser tattoo removal session
Immediately after treatment
Redness, swelling, heat, tenderness, and blistering in the area are normal.
To help with pain and discomfort:
We will provide a bottle of aloe vera gel.
Aloe vera helps with pain management and skin hydration.
You can keep the aloe vera gel in the fridge for a cooling effect.
You may also apply ice wrapped in a clean cloth or kitchen roll for 10–15 minutes at a time.
Aftercare is intentionally kept simple and minimal, as inflammation is an important part of the removal process.
Dressings and work considerations
In some cases, we may apply a non-adherent dressing, such as a Melolin dressing.
This is usually done to prevent friction, and for clients returning to work in messy or dirty environments.
If a dressing is applied:
Remove it as soon as you get home.
Then apply either ice (10–15 minutes), or aloe vera gel.
Looking after the treatment area
The treatment area may be left open and uncovered.
Do not scrub the area.
Do not apply any products without first consulting your laser technician.
Keep the area clean and dry.
Blistering and fluid
Blistering can occur and is a normal response.
Keep the area well moisturised.
Allow blisters to flake and fall off naturally.
DO NOT pick at blisters.
Picking is the most common cause of infection and scarring.
On occasion, clients may experience honey-coloured fluid (pus) oozing from blistered skin. If this occurs, seek immediate medical attention from your GP, who will likely prescribe an antibiotic cream.
Sun exposure
Sun exposure must be avoided for the entire course of laser treatments.
Ideally keep the area covered.
If exposure is unavoidable, apply SPF 50 to the treatment area.
Products, irritants, and skin care
Avoid irritants for at least two weeks, including: Retin-A, Retinol, Renova, Glycolics, bleaching creams, and exfoliants.
Do not use any products on the treatment area without first consulting your laser technician.
Lifestyle considerations
Refrain from alcohol for 3–7 days (alcohol may dilate blood vessels in the treatment area).
Keep well hydrated.
It is best to avoid smoking for a period of several weeks before and after your procedure, as smoking constricts the capillaries and taxes the immune system, thereby slowing healing and results.
Avoid photosensitivity inducing foods (Celery, Leek etc).
Activities to avoid
Avoid soaking for 24–48 hours. Showers are okay if tepid water is used.
Avoid excessive sweating for 24–48 hours. No saunas or vigorous working out.
Healing and between sessions
Your body will continue to break down and remove ink for weeks after each session.
Allowing enough time between treatments is essential for best results and reducing the risk of complications.
